Android apps to surface in mobile search results thanks to App Indexing

This could bring some cheer to Android app developers. Starting this week, Google has introduced an added feature to its search on Android devices that could help the discovery of apps.

According to a post on the Google Webmaster official blog, Product Manager Lawrence Chang wrote: You’ve invested time and effort into making your app an awesome experience, and we want to help people find the great content you’ve created. App Indexing has already been helping people engage with your Android app after they’ve installed it — we now have 30 billion links within apps indexed. Starting this week, people searching on Google can also discover your app if they haven’t installed it yet.

With hundreds of thousands of apps out there struggling to make a mark, this addition could really provide a boost to app makers. If as a developer, you’ve implemented App Indexing feature, now, when indexed Content from your app is relevant to a search done on Google on Android devices, searchers may start seeing app install buttons for your app in search results. Obviously, clicking on these tabs will take them to the Google Play store where they can install your app, then continue straight on to the right Content within it.

Like it started to index the entire Web in 1998, App Indexing lets Google index apps. Deep links to your Android app appear in Google Search results, letting users get to your native mobile experience quickly, landing exactly on the right Content within your app.

With the addition of these install links, Google is also starting to use App Indexing as a ranking signal for all users on Android, regardless of whether they have an app installed or not. The search giant is of the view that this addition to search will now help app developers acquire new users for their apps, as well as re-engage existing users.
