“Amazon Sidewalk”: noble idea but what will it mean for Online security? – News

A new experiment by Amazon has started to ring alarm bells. Called, “Sidewalk”, this one tries to create a mesh-kind Internet network in the neighborhood. By Amazon’s own admission, Amazon Sidewalk will be a shared network that “helps devices like Amazon Echo devices, Ring Security Cams, outdoor lights, motion sensors, & Tile trackers work better at home & beyond the front door. When enabled claims Amazon, Sidewalk can unlock “unique benefits” for your device, support other Sidewalk devices in your community, & even locate pets or lost items.

Amazon Sidewalk creates a low-bandwidth network with the help of Sidewalk Bridge devices including select Echo & Ring devices. These Bridge devices share a small portion of your Internet bandwidth which is pooled together to provide these services to you and your neighbors. And when more neighbors participate, the network becomes even stronger.

Which is all very fine but some security experts have expressed apprehension that this will make it even easier for hackers to get into your smart devices, if you do not opt out of the default settings before getting forcibly enrolled for Sidewalk.
