The impossible just happened. Apple customers targeted by hackers

News agency Reuters reports that Apple customers were targeted by hackers over the weekend in the 1st campaign against Macintosh computers using ‘ransomware’, researchers with Palo Alto Networks Inc (PANW.N) said.
Ransomware is 1 of the fastest-growing types of cyber threats, encrypts data on infected machines, then typically asks users to pay ransom in hard-to-trace digital currencies to get an electronic key so they can retrieve their data.
It was on March 4, said PANW.N, it had detected that the Transmission BitTorrent ailient installer for OS X was infected with ransomware, just a few hours after installers were initially posted.
“We have named this Ransomware “KeRanger.”Attackers infected two installers of Transmission version 2.90 with KeRanger on the morning of March 4.Transmission is an open source project. It’s possible that Transmission’s official website was compromised and the files were replaced by re-compiled malicious versions, but we can’t confirm how this infection occurred.”
