Sony announced the availability, through pre order, of thePS4 Pro Console – PlayStation, complete with enhanced graphics, including support for ultra HD 4K screens. With the PlayStation 4 Pro, you get much sharper visuals with faster frame rates & support for 4K streaming of video entertainment Content. Of course, to take advantage of the console’s new capabilities you will also need to upgrade your display & your game titles.

sonyps41The new console introduces a new, faster 8 core CPU, running @ 2.1GHz (the base PS4 is clocked @ 1.6GHz) & a much faster GPU: the Radeon GCN with 36 compute units @911 MHz, vs. the base PS4’s 18 units & 800MHz. Memory bandwidth & usable memory has been increased as well.

The PlayStation 4 Pro is backwards compatible with base PS4 HD game titles & video Content, supporting resolutions ranging from 1080p to 1440p, & it supports 2160p natively. Like the PS4, the Pro supports HDR which seeks to balance light in games in such a way that it comes close to the full spectrum of light we see with the human eye. It also provides auto-upscaling of HD & standard Blu-ray disks (it doesn’t support yet 4K Blue-ray disks.)

However, where the Pro shines is on some of the new native 4K games, by being able to show more vivid textures, as seen in details like dirt on clothing or rust on metal, as well as deeper shadows, which help create depth & image context, & on high fidelity assets, showing a higher degree of intricacy, increasing the number of images that can be shown on screen at one time.

Other important graphics enhancements of the PS4 Pro are:

  • Greater draw distance – Object visibility further in the background is improved with greater focus & more detail
  • Anti-aliasing – Soft-featured images like rounded corners & facer look smoother & visually more realistic
  • Visual FX – Small-featured visuals like steam & smoke will have a heavier look & more realistic feel to them

Among the new game titles that have been announced with native support for the PlayStation 4 Pro’s features are: Call Of Duty: Infinite Warfare, Watch_Dogs® 2, Mass Effect: Andromeda & Horizon Zero Dawn.

The new console can be pre-ordered online here for US $399.99, & will also be available as of November 10 in retail outlets in the US.
