This “addictive” videogame for Android & iPhone has gained its indie startup fame & riches in the 1 year since its inception by declaring over 130 million downloads from both popular App Stores.
The game asks you to tap a ball through obstacles as it switches color, & then you follow a color pattern on each obstacle to cross it. If you pass through the wrong color pattern you start again.
What’s probably the most amazing part of Color Switch‘s success story is that it was originally developed by a color blind entrepreneur & without writing a single line of code! A neat trick when you consider that the main premise of the game is to navigate avoiding colors that are the opposite of yours.
David Reichelt, who is based in Los Angeles, California, USA, said in an interview with Buildbox game creation software founder Trey Smith that Color Switch had been the most successful free mobile game, surpassing popular titles like Flappy Bird & Pokemon Go.
His focus while developing Color Switch was the in-depth aspects of the artistic process of game design, as opposed to programming & coding. He used an iterative process, where he tested 100s of game ideas prior to coming up with 1 that clicked. He then tweaked the game by constantly testing & improving, until he got to the point where he thought it was ready for launching.
The game was then launched by Fortafy Games, which is a joint venture with partners from Australia & Dubai. The business model for this free game is to charge for in-app purchases as well as to gather revenue through ads.
The Buildbox environment was crucial for the game’s development as it lets you model game play from a drag & drop toolbox.
