Sprayscape – the future of VR photos?

This article was 1st published on our sister Site, Digital World Native.

Ever wanted to take VR photos? Sprayscape is an open source app for Android that enables you to take 360 degree photos. A panoramic shot taken with a camera captures a side-to-side shot, but is placed on a 2D plane. A Sprayscape photo is panoramic, but is taken from a VR point of view & is all around you.

You can take a photo that goes up & down, side to side, or wherever you want. You can get this app on the Google Play Store or you can also download the source code for the app from Github. Github is a very popular code repository service that millions of open source developers use.

Watching the demo on Youtube, you can see how to capture only the parts that you want by holding down your finger & moving your phone around. This app takes advantage of your camera, the gyroscope, & the inside of a virtual sphere that the photo is “painted” to. Once you’ve finished a capture, you can generate a link to share with your friends who can then “step into” your creation & look around the sphere.
