Skype rolls out updates to mobile apps

Microsoft’s VoIP service Skype has rolled out updates to some of its mobile apps to, as said on its official blog, “give you more ways to express yourself. And have some fun while doing it.”

Here they are:

For Skype 5.3 Android

Big changes have been made to the chat experience. Users will see a bubble style chat layout, similar to the Skype apps on desktop & the iPhone. There’s added support for emoji now, so users can go beyond Skype’s emoticons & triple the number of ways to express themselves without typing a single word. When you choose 1 of Skype’s emoticons, the new feature will display a large animated version, if the emoticon’s the only thing you send in a message.

The update also supports messaging via speech to text when connected to an Android Auto experience.

Other key improvements in this update include:

Skype Qik 1.5

Skype has created 8 more effects users can use while recording videos to make them more fun & playful. Once the viewfinder is opened, users can select an effect to apply to their videos. They can even switch from 1 to another while recording to include multiple effects in one video message. Users can choose from favorites like mirror, x-ray & Minecraft (a staff favorite that makes you look 8-bit) or go crazy with hearts or snow. On iPhone & Android, users can tap the magic wand in the viewfinder window to display the effects options. On Windows Phone, swipe on the viewfinder to cycle through the different styles.

Skype 5.12 for iPhone

Skype has decided to add language support. Within the coming week, these languages will be added: Croatian, Slovak, Catalan, Vietnamese, Thai, Hindi, Greek, Hungarian, Indonesian, Malay, Turkish, & Estonian.
