Is Amazon Alexa spying on you? This US couple says so – News

It’s happening. What everybody has always feared about smart speakers. A family in Portland, USA asked Amazon to investigate what they say was Alexa recording a private conversation in their home. Not only did the smart speaker record, it also sent the recorded audio to the phone of a random person in Seattle, who was in the family’s contact list, according to a report on CBS affiliate KIRO-7.
Amazon later confirmed the privacy invasion but put it down to a “mistake” in Alexa understanding instructions.
“Unplug your Alexa devices right now,” the user, Danielle (no last name given), was told by her husband’s colleague in Seattle after the latter received full audio recordings between husband & wife, according to the KIRO-7 report. The colleague then sent the offending audio to Danielle & her husband to confirm the development.
When contacted by KIRO-7, Amazon confirmed the report & added in a statement that the company “determined this was an extremely rare occurrence.” Amazon didn’t clarify whether that meant such automatic audio-forwarding features had been built into all Echo devices up until that point, but the company added that “we are taking steps to avoid this from happening in the future.”
