The Online world is agog with news surrounding the European Union’s (EU) rejection today of certain legal amendments that would have established what was being touted as the concept of Net Neutrality in Europe.
The European Parliament voted this noon in favor of new regulations on how the Net must be managed. It immediately lead to major reactions from advocates for net neutrality who feared the new laws contained a number of loopholes that could lead to the creation of a “tiered Internet service.”
So what will the new legislation allow? According to Online reports coming in, the creation of Internet fast lanes for “specialized services” will let Internet Service Providers offer so-called “zero-rating” products — i.e. services that don’t count towards monthly data allowances. This, said critics, would allow the latter to allow big Internet companies to favor certain commercial deals.
The EU voted against all amendments to a bill on the European single market for electronic communications. Net Neutrality is the principle that all data should be treated equally, & that users not be asked to pay for preferential “fast lanes” for their Online data.
