With this Mac app you can make a mockup of your Site on a mobile device

‘Smock’ is a deceptively simple app that runs on your Apple Macintosh OSX computer, & lets you generate live high res screenshots you can size to a number of different smartphones & Tablets.

These screenshots can then be used to put together mockups & can be edited so that you can show off your Website just as you’d see them on your favorite iOS mobile device. All this without having to deal with cumbersome, low resolution screen captures on your phone. You can capture standalone images while you surf from a Mobile Safari browser on the simulated device on the Mac desktop.

Smock is being developed by independent interactive designer Robert Paige, who is based in St. Louis, USA. It has just been released on the Mac App Store. In a post elsewhere, Robert said his main aim when he started developing this app was to solve a common problem, which amounts to the difficulty & lack of good tools for creating decent mockups representing mobile Sites.

Normally, you’re forced to take screen captures on your mobile device & transfer these to your computer, & generally go back & forth between the 2 devices, applying Photoshop edits all the while. Smock makes it a lot easier for designers & developers to take high res screen captures since you’re working with a ‘live’ browser on your computer screen & can take native resolution screen shots which can then be edited with your desktop design apps, offering a nice way for designers & developers to add their work on mobile Websites to their portfolios.

Among the features already included in the app are:

  • ‘Live’ screenshots showcasing the mobile Website design
  • 3 choices for the color of your case: gold, white or black
  • Option to play around with the look of the browser for your mockup
  • Contains high resolution images

Smock is currently undergoing heavy development & new features are promised for the near future, like the 360 degree turning of your device.
