Post data deletion fiasco, Windows 10 Oct update re-released to insiders – News

Windows 10 October Update fixThis Website was among the 1st few to tell the world how Microsoft had hit the pause button on Windows 10 October 2018 Update. Well, now comes the news that Microsoft has published a Windows 10 October Update fix.  Well, the IT major today re-started the process of releasing the major update (version 1809) to Windows Insider community, the company stated in a blog post.

The tech giant will then review feedback, results as well as diagnostic data it will receive from insiders before deciding to resume the public rollout of the Update.

This announcement on the Windows 10 October Update fix is an aftermath to last week’s data deletion issue, as users complained about missing files after installation of Windows 10 October update. The company had claimed these were isolated cases & “very small number of users lost files” post installation. However, it had paused the roll out & launched investigation.

The file deletion problem, the blog mentioned, was limited to customers who had enabled Known Folder Redirection (KFR) which is a process to redirect known folders of Windows like screenshots, desktop, documents, pictures from the default folder location. Using KFR, consumers can redirect a known folder to a different drive.

Earlier too, during Windows 10 April 2018 update, users with KFR had reported an extra, empty copy of known folders on their device. And based on their feedback, Microsoft had introduced code in the October 2018 update to remove these empty, duplicate known folders.

This fix when fused with another change related to update construction sequence, lead to the deletion of the original “old” folder locations & their Content. And it left only the new “active” folder intact, the company explained in its blog.

In an assurance to customers, Microsoft has specified to have fully investigated complaints of data loss, identified & fixed all issues in the update & also conducted internal validation. So now, post update, the original old folder location & its Contents should remain intact. Moreover, to assist consumers impacted by data deletion, Microsoft Support & retail stores customer service personnel will try to recover data for consumers who have complained about data loss.

Apart from Windows 10 October Update fix, Microsoft has also released some other fixes in the monthly update for users who have already installed the update. Its Windows Insider Feedback Hub too has been enabled with a new feature that will help the company detect issues like data deletion & so on.
