What’s mesh WiFi & which are the popular options – e-Why, What & How

mesh wifiOtherwise referred to as “Whole Home WiFi”, a mesh WiFi system is a wireless setup which consists of a main router & a series of small satellite nodes or modules. The router is connected directly to a modem while the nodes are placed strategically around the house providing full WiFi coverage to an entire home or office.

Unlike traditional routers whose signals are easily weakened by distance & physical obstructions, a mesh WiFi system’s multiple nodes ensure that you get solid coverage from one end to the other & in every corner of your home. It is also better than long range extenders since it doesn’t need separate SSID set up for the modules.

The best WiFi networks are generally easy to set up. & although some of them can be quite expensive, they are still worth every penny.

Here are some of the best options out there:

  1. Google Wifi

Goggle’s mesh WiFi setup is by far one of the best in the market. Not only do you get one of the most powerful routers & node setup you can find out there, but the fact that it is a lot cheaper compared to other in its class is a major advantage. It is also surprisingly easy to set up.

With just three “WiFi points,” Google Wifi is able to deliver blanketed coverage of up to 4,500 square feet. This device combines the 2.4GHz & 5GHz signals it offers into a single band. But also makes use of beamforming technology to help your devices find the strongest signal automatically.

  1. Netgear Orbi AC3000

The fact that a Netgear product is on this list shouldn’t be a surprise to anymore since the company is synonymous with making some of the most powerful WiFi products out there.  The Netgear Orbi trumps Google Wifi in terms of range. It effectively covers a total of 5000 square feet. However, it uses more nodes to achieve this compared to Google Wifi. In addition to delivering strong wireless signals, Netgear Orbi also has a number of Ethernet ports which makes it a great choice for those who have devices that still need a wired connection.

  1. Ubiquiti AmpliFi HD

For those who live in a large house or a multi-story building, some of the best mesh WiFi devices out there might still not be able to deliver effectively. But Ubiquiti ‘s AmpliFi HD Wi-Fi is built specifically for that purpose. It is perhaps the most robust mesh WiFi device you will find on the market as it is able to cover an astounding  20,000 square feet thanks to its 6 High-density antennas which offers long range coverage. Surprisingly, it uses only 2 plugs in the mesh point to achieve this. While you might find this device too expensive especially if you live in a small space & you don’t need the range. However, for those who are merely fans of a chic design or whose living space requires the powerful coverage the device offers, it is one of the best choices they can go for.

Mesh WiFi routers are more effective at delivering a strong signal to every corner of your home compared to traditional routers. There are several impressive options all of which have varying specifications. Which ones you go for at the end of the day depends on your need & budget.
