Use ‘Storyline’ to create an Amazon Alexa voice skill with no coding

The Amazon Alexa intelligent personal assistant, together with its companion Echo device are revolutionizing the way we shop & interact Online. Storyline lets you quickly & without having to code, create voice apps, or skills, for Alexa.

Just in the US it’s estimated that 25+ million Amazon Echo devices have been sold in the last 3 years & that 130+ million people will be using the device worldwide by 2020. Voice is rapidly becoming the preferred way of interfacing with cloud services.

However, it’s really difficult to put together a voice app, needing to set up a server, configure interaction models & integrate intents & entities. You need to be a programmer & really know what’s going on.

Storyline is a tool that takes the development work out of the equation. It lets you create a working voice app from scratch or using templates. The template route is by far the easiest as they come with pre-built mindmap logic that speeds up the creation process. You can edit any template, which is a working app, & adapt it to your needs.

Starting from scratch, you 1st define what your voice app’s going to say (app response) by using the plus button & type what you want the app to say. For creating a user request (what the user’s going to say), you mouse over the last app response, click the plus button & mark the user response with the “//” symbol.

You can create as many app responses as needed for each user request. The sum of these derives in a voice app, which you can test out interactively. You can also create voice apps with more complex navigation & share your apps with friends or to test out via simple landing pages.

The Storyline dashboard allows you to publish your app on the Amazon App Store where you can monitor statistics. You can also publish directly onto an Echo device.

Storyline is based in Belarus & was founded by Vasili Shynkarenka. You can sign up for using the tool for free from the product page.
