Silicon Valley No: 1 in list of Top 20 startup ecosystems in the world

Silicon Valley, MountainView, California, USA, still remained numero uno so far as the overall global startup ecosystem was concerned, according to a new report. It was followed by New York city, Los Angeles, Boston & Tel Aviv for the 2 to 5 places. Other notables in the Top 20 startup ecosystems of the world were: London @ No: 6, Berlin @ No: 9, Singapore @ No: 10, Sao Paulo @ No: 12, Bangalore @ No: 15 & Sydney @ No: 16.

The ‘Global Startup Ecosystem Ranking’, a part of the Compass Startup Ecosystem Report Series, was updated almost 3 years when the last Startup Ecosystem Report was released in November 2012. Compass was a provider of automated reporting & benchmarking software for 34,000 startups & tech companies around the globe. Formerly known as Startup Genome, Compass had previously published 3 critically acclaimed reports on startups. The 2012 Startup Ecosystem Report was downloaded more than 100,000 times, it claimed.

The Index, said a Compass blog post, was produced by ranking ecosystems along 5 major components:
Performance, Funding, Talent, Market Reach, & Startup Experience.

The Compass team added 1 important caveat: The index did not include startup ecosystems from China, Taiwan, Japan, & South Korea because “the language barrier slowed our ability to gather enough to include them in the ranking. We expect to have these ecosystems included in our ranking later this year.”

Best startup ecosystems

The centerpiece of the 2015 Startup Ecosystem Ranking was Compass’ updated & revamped Global Ecosystem Index, which ranked the top 20 startup ecosystems around the world.

The primary basis of each component was:
• Performance on the funding & exit valuations of startups headquartered in an ecosystem
• Funding on VC investment in the ecosystem & the time it took to raise capital
• Talent on the quality of technical talent, its availability & cost
• Market reach on the size of the local ecosystem’s GDP & the ease of reaching customers in international markets
Startup Experience on first-party survey data that was linked to success of startups, such as having veteran startup mentors or founders with previous startup experience

The rest of the report included detailed deep dives into the top 20 startup ecosystems.

The 2015 Startup Ecosystem Ranking was a collaborative effort involving:

• Insights from over 200 interviews with entrepreneurs from 25 countries

• Insights from 11,000 startup surveys completed in the last 5 months
• Insights from data & Content partners from 10 countries including: Deloitte, Crunchbase, Global Entrepreneurship Week, Orb Intelligence, Dealroom, & many other incubators, accelerators, VCs, policy makers, & academics (What’s New On The Net, too, participated in it)
• Support from Ron Berman at Wharton Business school, Dr. Thomas Funke from the German Federal Ministry for Economics and Steve Blank, who wrote the foreword for the report.
