Platform for modern Web development wishes to do away with Web servers – #Startups

Netlify founders Christian Bach & Mathias Biilmann Christensen wish to trigger a “revolution” by being at the forefront of modern Web development. The platform that helps developers build & deploy Websites, aims at doing away with traditional Web servers & replaces them with static front-ends & compact, service-specific functions for the back-end. Therefore, there’s no need for each Website to employ back-end server-side code for normal Website functioning.

Methodology used by Netlify, founded in 2015, is more common to mobile app building & it’s this ease of development that the team wants to use for Web applications. It has raised an additional US $30 mln led by Kleiner Perkins’ Mamoon Hamid with Andreessen Horowitz & the founders of Slack, Yelp, GitHub & Figma participating, the company announced on its Website blog. Their motive is to replace Web servers with a global ‘Application Delivery Network’.

Instead of broad, labyrinth-like development processes, Netlify condenses back-end functionality into compartmentalized micro-services, freeing developers to concentrate on building a Website, without having to worry about data collection techniques. For instance, form processing, usually handled by a developer-written, server-side script, is easily integrated into Netlify’s data reporting dashboard with a few standard lines of code.

Employing all of the most modern platforms such as AWS Lambada, Github distribution & API- emulating functionality, Netlify believes that it has put themselves at the forefront when it comes to Web development. They claim that their method makes Website Content delivery up to 10 times faster than traditional servers as well as obviating caching. That’s the way forward in modern Web development.

The team describes a simple workflow involving a 3 click system for deployment:

  1. Setup a GitHub, GitLab or BitBucket repository for code
  2. Add build settings
  3. Deploy

Features are numerous & multi-functional such as:

  • Atomic deploys
  • Cache invalidation
  • Snapshots & rollbacks
  • Custom headers
  • Proxy & redirect rules
  • DNS management
  • Automatic HTTPS settings for security
  • Global deployment

The company has more than 300,000 developers using their services, states the Site.
