‘Inbox When Ready’ lets you focus on what’s really important when using Gmail

inboxwhenreadyWhen you’re composing or reading email it’s really easy to get distracted, especially as new messages keep arriving into your Inbox while you try & concentrate on composing an important email. It can really get to be frustrating, & your productivity can suffer. Now, if Gmail is your email service of choice, you can use this Chrome extension to hide your Inbox & concentrate solely on the task at hand.

The extension works on both, the classic Gmail interface as well as the on the newer Inbox by Gmail. With ‘Inbox When Ready’, you can not only stop the email from coming, but hide the Inbox altogether.

The extension hides your Gmail inbox by default while all other folders & views remain as they’ve always been, so that you can search your messages, read & compose without any distractions. There’s a handy ‘Show Inbox’ click box that you can press any time you want to re-enable your Inbox & you’ll be able to deal with all the messages you’ve gotten in the meantime.

A new feature called ‘Inbox Lockout’ will lock you out of your Inbox at fixed times that you have specified. That way you can schedule times when you can’t or don’t want to deal with your Inbox, like weekends, evenings or early mornings, so you can concentrate on doing other things, like relaxing or on actual useful work.

If you like getting all of your emails instantly & cherish frequent interruptions to your work so that you can immediately take care of business, then this extension is definitely not for you.

This extension is under development by a Reykjavik, Iceland-based startup led by Peter Hartree. He has said elsewhere that privacy was 1 of his main concerns, so the extension doesn’t require Gmail API access, & does not collect private info nor read your emails.

The extension is free & it’s available from the Google Chrome Web Store here.
