So what exactly is Google Fi – a primer – e-Why, What & How

how does google fi work

Are you aware that Google has a cellular service called Fi? Formerly known as ‘Project Fi’ Google’s wireless service, is surely but steadily working into people’s consciousness. But how does Google Fi work? This Mobile Virtual Network Operator (or MVNO for short) can actually help them save some money in addition to improving their phone’s security.

So how does Google Fi work?

A MVNO operator basically provides wireless network services which allow users to make & receive calls by using mobile data, pretty much like a traditional network provider; the only difference is that an MVNO like Google Fi does not own any network infrastructure that makes such a service possible. Instead, it works more like a high-tech landlord.

While Google Fi doesn’t have the network to provide these services, it has an arrangement with the providers which allows it to tap into their own network & re-package the access to users of its services.

Currently, for example, in the United States, Google Fi is connected to 3 carrier networks to provide this. It switches between T-mobile, US Cellular & Sprint depending on which one has the strongest network & works at the fastest speed.  This is one of the major advantages of being a Google Fi user since you get to enjoy the strongest service at every given moment.

To start using Google Fi, they provide you with a special SIM card, & some software in your phone. However, on the Pixel 3, 3 XL, 2 & 2XL, an integrated eSIM lets you use Google Fi without the physical SIM card.

Another way in which Google Fi works – by using open WiFi networks

In addition to the 3 mobile networks, Google Fi also uses WiFi signals whenever possible. As the subscriber moves around, his/her phone will use the ‘WiFi assistant’ to search & then to connect to open WiFi networks. Whenever your phone connects to WiFi, the connection is routed through a VPN.

So, there it is. Essentially, a Google Fi-equipped phone will route your calls through WiFi & cellular networks to get your the best possible coverage, always.

So how does Google Fi work internationally?

Google Fi also works internationally, in over 170 countries at no extra cost for data or texting. Google Fi has only one plan. What you eventually get depends on the phone you have & its features. The only catch is that speeds in countries outside the US will vary depending on the country you’re in.
