Google introduces ‘Password Check’ – Internet news

Here’s one more way of staying safe Online. Google has introduced the Password Checkup Chrome extension as a new tool in the war against hackers.

What the Password to Checkup Chrome extension does is to quickly check against a a data base of around 4 billion credentials that are “unsafe”, whenever you sign in to a site. If the username & password you used is “unsafe”, it will then trigger a warning.

Password Check Chrome extensionPassword Checkup Chrome extension , says Google, was designed jointly with cryptography experts at Stanford University “to ensure that Google never learns your username or password”, & that any breach data stays safe from wider exposure. Since Password Checkup was an early experiment, Google had now decided to share the technical details behind this privacy preserving protocol in order to be transparent about how we keep your data secure.

Among other things, Password Checkup Chrome extension has been designed in such a way as to only alert a user when all of the information necessary to access his account has fallen into the hands of an attacker.

Says Google….

We only generate an alert when both your current username and password appear in a breach, as that poses the greatest risk.
