By 2024-end, 5G subscriptions would have touched 1.9 billion: Ericsson – News

Ericsson mobility report 2019

The new Ericsson Mobility Report June 2019 has predicted that by 2024-end, 5G subscriptions would have touched 1.9 billion. At least 35% of traffic will be carried by 5G networks, & up to 65% of the global population could be covered by the technology, making it the “fastest generation to be rolled out on a global scale.”

Other highlights include:

  • Mobile subscriptions worldwide totalled around 7.9 billion in Q1 2019, with 44 million new subscriptions added.
  • Mobile broadband subscriptions grew to 6 billion, with 140 million new subscriptions in Q1 2019.
  • LTE subscriptions hit 3.7 billion, with 160 million new subscriptions in the same quarter.

GSM/EDGE-only subscriptions declined by 80 million, said the report, while other technologies declined by around 30 million.

Subscriptions associated with smartphones account for more than 60% of all mobile phone subscriptions. The number of subscriptions exceeds the population in many countries, said Ericsson, which is largely due to inactive subscriptions, multiple device ownership or optimization of subscriptions for different types of calls. As a result, the number of mobile subscribers is lower than the number of mobile subscriptions. Today, there are around 5.7 billion subscribers globally compared to 7.9 billion subscriptions. Global mobile subscription penetration is now at 104%.
