Alexa’s keyword tool helps SEO efforts by suggesting the best ones

keywords difficulty

Getting your Site ranked highly by Google’s search engine can be tricky & if you don’t make the right Search Engine Optimization (SEO) decisions your potential customers will have a hard time finding your product, & you will have an even harder time selling them.

This is where Alexa’s recently announced Keyword Difficulty Tool can help you by offering keyword ideas that are relevant to your Site, target audience & topics you want to rank for.

According to Alexa, the best way for a Site to rank high in Google is to optimize its ‘Competitive Power’. This is a metric developed to determine the level of keyword competition that a Site can target with more confidence of getting results.  In other words, a Website owner should avoid using keywords with which he has no chance of competing against other, more powerful & highly ranked competitors. So Alexa helps you find keywords with a “competition score that is at or below your Site’s Competitive Power”.

You start by creating a seed phrase related to a topic for which you’d like to create Content. The tool then generates a list of keywords based on what other folks often search for in addition to your seed phrase, as in Amazon’s “customers who bought this item also bought” recommendation feature. Alternatively, you can input into the tool the name of a Site with similar Content to your own, & you get a list of SEO keywords from phrases already driving traffic to that Site.

You then sort & narrow down to the most relevant list of keywords. After this you use the ‘Competition Filter’ to fine tune your results to those for which you’ll have the highest chance of ranking for: those that are within your ‘Competitive Power’. As Kimberly Cooper, Alexa Sr. Marketing Manager, has said elsewhere:

One of the ways it’s unique is in how highly relevant the keyword suggestions are. They are based on the concept of “people who searched your seed query also searched these other queries.” So the list of results are highly tailored to the audience that would tend to search the seed term you input. Also, we measure the competitiveness of each keyword in the context of how well your domain could compete on that term. In other words, we help you find terms where you’ll be “punching your weight.”

Alexa was founded in 1996 & is a San Francisco, California-based Web analytics company. It is part of Amazon.com.  You can get the Keyword Difficulty Tool for a 7 day free trial here & you can then subscribe for it starting at US $9.99/month for the basic plan, which includes: Certified Alexa Rank, Certified Metrics for on-site analytics & basic metrics for Website research & analysis.
