With ‘Camarada’ you can use your phone to capture & share VR video

This new smartphone app allows you to capture stereoscopic 3D videos & it claims to be the only app that can sync playback across multiple VR viewers. So you can truly have a social viewing experience without cabling or expensive specialized rigs, by using either 1 or 2 phones.

If we want to record a 3D video we need more than 1 lens, since we have to make sure that each lens records at a slightly different angle. It hardly seems possible that a mobile phone app can record 3D videos, but Camarada actually accomplishes this; only the catch is that you need to use 2 phones.

This new app allows users sync 2 phones so that they can be joined up when a video scene is being recorded. If we’re recording something that’s near us, like a closeup scene, we stack the phones with the cameras close together, pointing at the scene. The cameras will have to be moved apart as the distance from the scene increases.

See how it works:

At the moment Camarada only lets you sync 2 phones, but its developers are already working on a feature that will allow users to sync up 3 or more devices so that users will be able to record 360 degree 3D videos.

Unlike Google’s Cardboard camera, which lets you capture 360 degree stills, Camarada records video. You can actually view the videos in any of the major VR platforms, including Google Cardboard. Oh, & by the way, Camarada also lets you take 3D still pictures as well.

(Camarada also allows recording using a single smartphone, since it can render the video for viewing on VR platforms. Of course, if you opt for doing it this way, you won’t be generating 3D videos.)

The social component of Camarada is its ability to produce synchronized playback on multiple VR devices. It turns “solitary VR viewing into social experiences – by synchronizing the playback of VR videos/games, consumers are able to see, hear, & react at exactly the same time.”

The app is being developed by Warren, New Jersey, USA-based startup Aimfire, Inc. The company specializes in the development of signal processing & computer vision tech for mobile, & was co-founded by Joe Sofio & Clem Ren.
