‘WeGame’ is Chinese gaming giant Tencent’s response to ‘Steam’

Valve & it’s Steam store is without a doubt the leading PC gaming platform worldwide, with 125+ million user accounts. Now China wants to take them on with a twist on its Tencent free games platform which is already the country’s leading gaming community with 200+ million accounts in China alone.

The new platform, ‘WeGame’, is said to include paid Content & a worldwide focus to add to its already popular titles like League of Legends.

Tencent is one of China’s biggest & most influential tech corporations & among the biggest internet companies in the world (in fact the TGP platform is said to have been downloaded in excess of 4 billion times). It’s also the biggest gaming company worldwide, but few outside of China have heard of it. According to analysts, the company wants to take on the rest of the world with the aforementioned gaming platform.

China & the rest of Asia is a pretty huge gaming market & already forms an important base for Tencent to build upon. The company owns Supercell, the maker of Clash of Clans, & Riot Games, which makes league of Legends, as well as part of Glue Mobile, makers of Kim Kardashian: Hollywood. It’s also got parts of Activision Blizzard & Epic Games.

Tencent is best known in China for its social media apps WeChat & QQ, which are more popular in the country that Facebbok or Twitter. In fact, Tencent has also been in the news lately because of other expansion plays, its funding of India’s ecommerce startup Flipkart for US $1.4 billion, & its investment of US $200 million in second-hand trading platform 58.com, which helps make it Asia’s biggest listed company. It’s also recently invested in Kuaishow, a live-stream app focused on the China market & especially on gaming streams.
