Use this app to locate a free WiFi spot near you – New app

OpenSignal is a Site that has been in the business of creating a comprehensive database of cell phone towers, cell phone signal strength readings, & WiFi access points around the world. The obvious aim is to become the global authority on wireless networks. You can even compare coverage across global locations.

Most of the data depicted on its Website comes from data collected by users of the OpenSignal Android & iPhone apps. The data is stripped of any identifying information, & then uploaded to the OpenSignal servers, taking care to use as little processing power & battery life as possible.

What should now be some good news for users of WiFi around the world is that OpenSignal has launched an iOS app called WiFiMapper that is being “claimed to be the world’s largest WiFi data base”, showing you WiFi spots at about 500 million hotspots globally, & counting.

Using this app, claimed OpenSignal, will help users save on roaming when travelling by going to free hotspots in every major city in the world.

Features:
• Map of nearby free WiFi hotspots
• Foursquare & WifiMapper comments – get more information about the hotspot venue
• Get performance information on the WiFi hotspot before you use it

OpenSignal wants every one to join the world’s largest WiFi community.

The WifiMapper showed the best free hotspots nearby. The details page gives users relevant information on the hotspot & its location in addition to comments from the community. The list of the hotspots presented is based on the OpenSignal algorithms, 1 for which, it has asked users to collaborate & correct the status of WiFi networks as & when they spot errors.

This free app requires iOS7 or later versions. There are reports of introducing paid versions of the WiFiMapper later but these are unconfirmed.
