‘Tribe’ is a free, augmented video messenger app

tribeTribe just announced the availability of version 2 of its 1-touch video walkie-talkie app on both iOS & Android platforms. The new version can add subtitles automatically to your video messages, which can be recorded & stored & sent to friends or groups. If you tell it, via trigger words, tribe will overlay your video with links to calendar requests or to social media accounts like Instagram or Facebook.

Of course, tribe wants to be your messaging social network of choice, by trying to draw you away from the big boys in the video messaging world like Snapchat, iMessenger or Facebook Messenger. To do that, they’ve added a rich set of features to video messages like the aforementioned ‘magic words’ feature; metadata in the form of weather & location is included, & it even has integration with Uber, so you can book a ride for your friends.

Other features & advantages of using Tribe are:

  • V 2 improves on the group chat experience & makes you feel like you’re always there with your friends, no matter where they (& you) are.
  • Tribe lets you open your video messages in the same way you do it with texts, at your convenience & at any time. You can listen to the audio in a video message as if it were a phone call, or use silent mode & automatically get text transcriptions of audio on your screen.
  • You can create calendar events based on what your friends are saying in video messages, on Google Calendar or iCal.
  • Send & reply directly from your phone’s lock screen
  • Instagram-style filters for your video messages
  • Pull-to-search for contacts
  • Snooze to watch videos later
  • Rush mode for speeding up messages

Tribe is a startup founded in August 2015. It’s based in the San Francisco Bay Area, California, USA & already has over half a million downloads of its app. It boasts of over 40,000 daily users.
