‘Surf’ is new iOS video chat app for meeting new friends – New app

Social network & chat apps abound, & you may wonder why we need a new one. ‘Surf’ seems a fun way to meet new people Online or to stay in touch. It’s aimed at younger people & works by making it easy to video chat from your phone, including text messaging & other fun features.

According to the makers of this recently launched app, the aim is to help you meet new people to make new memories together, & doing so is just 1 click away. You can select from random photos of boys or girls & ask to chat them up, & eventually turn your random video chat into a good friend.

At this time there still aren’t a lot of users in the network but it’s growing pretty fast. It may take a while at first to actually get matched up with someone you may actually want to talk to, but if you keep trying you may eventually build up a group of friends to chat with.

The company behind Surf is HPCNT SG, which is based in Singapore & China, but its efforts so far have been centered in the US market. The founders are Sung-ho Kim & Alex Gershon & they are trying to build critical mass regarding a sufficient user base to really make the user experience compelling. They’re using 3rd party vendors as well as running Facebook ads & trying to get into major US Colleges.

According to Alex Gershon, they’ve been getting 100s of daily active users (DAU), which is quite exceptional for an app that launched a little more than a week ago. They’re currently marketing to users on the same specific time zones to get the number average concurrent users (ACU) up, which he thinks is important to gaining traction.

Surf is pretty simple to use & does a good job of letting you take a break from video chatting by letting you text when you want to. You can build up a list of friends natively in the app so you can reconnect with them & when someone acts inappropriately, there’s an in-video reporting feature, which is Surf’s way of keeping the app a safe way to spend time.
