Social media drove more traffic to major news stories of 2015 than search: Parse.ly

So, in 2015, the biggest news stories…. how did readers find them? According to publishing analytics provider Parse.ly, for some of the “news biggies”, social media traffic dominated search within the Parse.ly network of over 400 media Sites. Incidentally, Parse.ly network includes Reuters,Business Insider, & big publishers like that.

Parse.ly has put out a detailed report on its survey. Here’s what it said on its official blog:

Since the digital publishing industry has been so focused on the growth of social as a medium for news distribution at the expense of search, we wanted to see if this held true for individual stories. So for each of our top news events, the Parse.ly team checked on the referral traffic from social sources and search sources. You’ll find the results below.
