Sending email messages & attachments back & forth between team members collaborating on a project tends to get confusing & is often impracticable. ‘Missive’ is a new kind of email app that combines email & chat with shared conversations for when things require more than 2 eyeballs.
The app is a full-featured Web-based email client (a native Mac version is also available) that lets you invite collaborators & chat with them within email threads. You can compose an email at the same time as other team members, editing in real time, & a collaborator can send the email on your behalf.
The threaded chats are built right into the app’s Inbox, so that each thread corresponds to a specific subject header & contains the users involved in managing & participating in a particular email message. This way, topics aren’t buried, as your team engages in an asynchronous workflow, where emails & chat are truly matched up in a unified interface. It may sound odd, but this approach can lead to a big gain in workplace productivity, if the developer’s claims are to be believed.
You can use the app with any Gmail or Google Apps account, & the Quebec, Canada-based Company that is also responsible for conferencebadge.com, claims that soon other email providers will also be supported. Missive brings real-time collaborative features like chat, mentions and file sharing, directly in your email client, thus reducing the need for cluttering email forwards and CC, third party apps (chat, help desk), or even phone calls and meetings.
Missive is currently in beta, & you can ask to participate in the beta testing program for free here. The pricing for the production version will remain free for unlimited users & a 1 month chat/mail history, but as can be seen in the pricing page, a 6 month history, or ‘starter’ version will cost US$ 5 per month, while the ‘productive’ version, with unlimited history runs to US $10 per month. The Mac OS client version can be downloaded for free here.
