Meet ‘Nylas N1’ – an extendable open source mail app

nylas

N1 has its code published on GitHub with a very active community & works natively on Mac OS, Windows & Linux. It’s built on JavaScript, leveraging some of the most powerful of the latest Web technologies like ES6 & HTML5, but doesn’t take a performance hit by depending on a browser. Instead, it uses Atom & Electron, which sit atop NodeJS & Chromium, & then adds React & Flux, to scale up N1’s possibilities, giving it native-level performance.

These building blocks allow N1 to be constantly updated  with community-developed features, since it’s designed to be modified with relative ease. It also means that developers from all over are constantly working on it, allowing for the creation of plug-ins & extensions by simply knowing how to code with JavaScript. If you’re not a coder, you can still access an ever growing library of these plugins that are freely available for use.

Among Nylas N1’s most salient features are things like ‘Tracking’, which keeps tabs on the reception of your email messages; ‘Send Later’, which schedules messages to be sent at a future time & allows for automatic follow-ups; ‘Send Availability’, which helps to synchronize time slots for meet-ups without sending mails back & forth; quick replies, with which you can customize your common responses; & a whole lot more, like:

  • Beautiful design & typography
  • Unified inbox
  • Emoji keyboard
  • Gmail mode (single pane)
  • Outlook mode (dual pane)
  • Menu bar icon
  • Smart draft translation
  • Fast local search
  • Gmail-style personal indicators
  • Aliases
  • Phishing detection plugin
  • Launch on system start
  • Quick compose with attachments
  • Mail rules (aka filters)
  • Customizable full keyboard shortcuts (presets for Gmail, Outlook, Apple Mail)
