You can dance to the WordPress ‘Calypso’ now

WordPress.com users, here’s some news. WP has unveiled an admin interface today. If you’re a regular user, you may have, by now, seen the new look. The biggest change is that WP has now switched to the JavaScript script instead of PHP. Much of WP continues on the latter but the new interface is now in JavaScript.

If you run the open source version of WordPress on your own server, you can activate the new interface on your own Site through the plugin Jetpack. Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com also released a WordPress application for Macintosh OS X. And it made available the code that powers the new interface as open source software for everyone.

Writing a post on Medium, CEO Matthew Mullenweg said:

Today we’re announcing something brand new, a new approach to WordPress, and open sourcing the code behind it. The project, codenamed Calypso, is the culmination of more than 20 months of work by dozens of the most talented engineers and designers I’ve had the pleasure of working with (127 contributors with over 26,000 commits!).
