‘Jared’ takes care of dependency updates on Android App projects – Bot

Android apps

If you’re a software developer working on projects based on Android technology, dependency updates can come fast & heavy. Instead of trying to keep up with changes & manually updating packages yourself, you can use ‘Jared’ to automatically let you know what can be updated instantly.

Jared is a bot that basically works by checking for updates so you don’t have to. Whenever 1 of your project’s dependencies gets updated, Jared will submit a pull request so that you’re notified of any breaking changes.

For each new dependency version a pull request appears with updates. It’s created with the new version in the build.grade file (Gradle is an industry standard build tool for workgroups).

Following this the Jared bot checks the new features & fixes the version, making sure that everything looks good. Then it checks that the continuous integration (CI) server response is correct & that the newest version integrated successfully. When all this is done, you can just take the changes to the main project branch & merge it, & your project is successfully updated.

Jared can be accessed via a private beta currently being held by Xmartlabs, a Montevideo, Uruguay-based development company. You can register in the project page to participate in the beta, & you can check the project out on GitHub.

Xmartlabs is also a strong player in a wide range of other useful Open Source projects on GitHub such as: XLForm, an iOS library for creating dynamic table-view forms; Eureka, which is an iOS form builder developed in Swift; & for Android: XLPagerTabStrip, which lets you switch among a collection of view controllers; XLRemoteImageView, which displays a progress indicator while downloading an image; & XLData, used to load & show data sets.
