Here’s a powerful new macOS video player called ‘IINA’ – #Startup

Desktop video players are a dime a dozen, but this new open source app begs to be different & aims to revolutionize your user experience on the Mac. It boasts a powerful new functionality not supposedly found elsewhere & a new, simplified & intuitive UI design.

You’ll need a late model Macintosh to take advantage of IINA, as it’s “born to be a modern macOS app”. It’s developed in Swift & the new MPV media player, has a user-friendly/intuitive interface & exploits new macOS functionality like Force Touch & the Touch Bar.

If you’re happy with the venerable VLC or other legacy payers as your go-to video player, you’re kind of stuck with the kind of tech & video interface that’s as old as the hills. Here is where IINA shines, as it makes use of interactive UI components & gestures, while maintaining traditional cascaded menus as well.

IINA’s use of MPV means that you’ll constantly get high-quality video output for modern video types, optimized for the retina screen.

It includes such features as:

  • 4 original themes

  • Customizable key bindings

  • Customizable mouse action

  • Playlist & chapter support

  • Subtitles

The app’s target user base is both novices as well as advanced users. Its elegant UI, ease of use & intuitiveness helps the new user get started quickly, while its customizability & expandability will get pro users hooked.

The app is the project of Hong Kong-based developer Collider Li & is still in its alpha testing stage, & it comes with a caveat that it may still be somewhat buggy. It’s a GPLv3-licensed open source project, hosted on Github & it requires a late model Mac running macOS 10.10+, although v10.12 is recommended.

You can download IINA from Github here for free, including its source code. Since it’s an open source project, you’re welcome to contribute to help fine tune the code, draft a bug report, add functionality (or request new features), fork it, etc.
