Here comes YouTube Go, an Android app for India

youtubegoIt was a visit to India that sparked it off. Google has launched ‘YouTube Go’, a YouTube app built from scratch to “bring YouTube to the next generation of viewers.”

Johanna Wright, Vice President of Product Management,YouTube, said earlier in the year, a visit to India, especially a city called Nagpur in the center of the country, made her realize that even though people loved YouTube, poor connectivity & “less powerful” mobile phones spoiled the experience for them by slow loading of the videos.

For the next few months, she and a team of engineers traveled around the country gathering ideas & testing prototypes. What was born was ‘YouTube Go’, designed with 4 concepts in mind, according to a post on its official blog by the VP.

So what’s Go all about?

  • It’s ‘relatable’, with video recommendations & a user interface made with end-users in mind
  • The app is designed to be offline first & work even when there’s low or no connectivity
  • It’s also cost-effective, providing transparency & reducing data usage
  • Finally, it’s a social experience, connecting you with the people & Content

Here are some of YouTube Go’s most notable features:

  • Find & discover relatable videos right on the home screen: YouTube Go homescreen features trending & popular videos in your area, so that you’ll find new videos that you & your community care about.
  • Preview videos before you save or watch: Not sure if you want to watch the video? On YouTube Go when you tap on a thumbnail, it’ll trigger a quick preview of the video, giving you a better sense of what the video is about before you decide to save or play it.
  • Choose your resolution when saving or streaming videos: Whether you’d like to save a video for offline viewing later, or stream it now, you can see & choose the amount of data you’d like to spend on that video.
  • Share videos with friends nearby: Share videos with friends & family nearby without using any data.

Here’s where you can sign up.
