Get this free ‘Aspect Ratio’ calculator for designers & developers – #Startups

This free, open source reference tool & NPM module called ‘Aspect Ratio’ seems simple & straightforward to use, & calculates aspect ratios & device resolutions for common (& not so common) video screen resolutions.

If you’re a designer or programmer who frequently works with video & has to adapt resolutions to multiple screen sizes then you’re probably always trying to figure out different aspect ratios. The Aspect Ratio Site shows the screen resolution & aspect ratio for some of the most frequently used devices such as Apple iPhone X, 8 & 8 Plus; the Google Pixel 2 & 2 XL; the Samsung Galaxy S5, S6, S7, S7 Edge, S8 & the LG G6.

It also has ‘presets’ calculated for common resolutions, like: HD TV, 4K TV & UW4K TV. Once you have selected the resolution/aspect ratio that you’re interested in, you can click on the ‘Copy CSS’ button & CSS code will be generated, which you can then incorporate into your Web page or app.

If the screen resolution you want is not in the pre-calculated list, the tool can make a custom calculation of the aspect ratio for you based on width & height that you provide. Beside being able to use the module in JavaScript projects, you can also use the handy command line utility that’s provided.

Aspect Ratio is free & open source, under an MIT License. It was developed by Brooklyn, New York, USA-based developer & designer Ryan Hefner. Ryan is currently a founder, & is building up the design studio startup Rock Kick Co. He’s also worked at Vimeo, Fantasy Interactive & a number of other tech companies.

An example of a user case cited by Ryan is for determining aspect ratios of videos accessed via CMS & passing them to the the react-video-players library so that they can scale in fluid layouts.
