How to know ‘Who runs this’ Site

whorunsths

Do you want to know who owns/runs the Sites that you visit every day? Well, this is what this next tool is all about. ‘Who runs this’ is a tool that, just as its name suggests, shows you who runs a particular Site. The tool helps you to find the parent company that owns a particular Website easily.

To use Who runs this, you simply input the domain of the Site you want to search in the query field. Then you can click on the search button. For some Sites, the tool will give you the name & a short description of the owner. However, for others, it will just give the name of the owner. E.g., If you input http://google.com/, it will show that the domain is owned by Google Inc. In addition, it tells you what Google Inc is & what it does.

Also, Who runs this has a WTF button used to log any interesting connections. For example, if you searched for an owner & the result is a fascinating one you can click on this button. It is important to note that you have to put a scheme in front of the URL for it to work.

How Who runs this works

Other than being available on the Web, Who runs this is also available as an extension for the Chrome browser. It works by looking up the registrant organization of the domain you input. It then uses Corpwatch API to find the domains parent company & Wikipedia for the short description.  Who runs this securely transmits the URL of your browser tab to their servers. It then extracts the domain & run a WHOIS query on it. According to the privacy policy, all the upvoted domains are stored in their database with no association to users with the sole purpose of counting the upvotes.

This startup is developed by Zsolt Kacso, a Web Designer. It’s located in Massachusetts, USA.
