Free stock photos & videos, anyone? Here’s Pexels

Photos, that too free ones with the Creative Commons Zero (CC0) license. How great would that be? Well that’s a reality with Pexels. What’s more, these chaps have now launched a similar video service.

Pexels offers high quality stock images for free downloads to be used for personal & commercial purposes. This means you can copy, modify, distribute & perform the photos without really being worried about copyright violation repurcussions.

All images here can be used without asking for permission or setting a link to the source. So that attribution is not required. All in all the photos are completely free to be used for any legal purpose.

According to the Site owners, the CC0 license was released by the non-profit organization Creative Commons (CC). The only care you need to take is to ensure that identifiable people may not appear in a bad light or in a way that they may find offensive, unless they give their consent.

Currently, Pexels has about 2,000 photos. It promises to add 70 high resolution photos every week. All photos are hand-picked from free image sources. These chaps promise to add only creative commons photos from reliable sources like Unsplash, Gratisography, Little Visuals, among others.

Pexels started almost a year ago. Since then it evolved to a huge platform for free stock photos. Many designers & bloggers use it every day to find photos for their personal & commerical projects.

Pexels Videos, on similar lines was introduced a few days ago. It follows the same concept as the free images Site. The only difference is that its purpose is to help people find free videos instead of photos.

Oh, also Pexel 2.0 was recently released.

It has new features & add-ons.

  • You can now find interesting categories on the discover photos tab
  • It’s now possible to search by colors (e.g. search for color: blue) & you can see which colors occur in the photos
  • Many design improvements
  • Now upload 10 instead of 5 new photos per day
  • It is faster & more stable
  • Improved social sharing
