Over time your email accounts tend to get messy & bloated as you subscribe to more & more newsletters that you rarely, if ever, pay attention to. Startup ‘Cleanfox’ claims it can help you to quickly & securely get rid of old emails, & to unsubscribe to unwanted newsletters. As an added bonus, it quantifies the weight of CO2 you save from being released into the atmosphere by taking this action.

Cleanfox claims that its main aim is to “save the environment”, as 10 grams of CO2 pollute the atmosphere for every newsletter sent. Statistically, 90% of them will never be opened so imagine the pollution. As an email service user you may take this with a grain of salt, but for the end-users, Cleanfox may save time while dealing with messages & help them focus on what truly matters.

As of this writing, Cleanfox’s Website claims to have cleaned well over 1.3 million emails, which translates into almost 14 tons of CO2 saved & 2,757 trees rescued.  The Web-based service currently supports the some of the most widely used email services:  Gmail, Yahoo, Microsoft: Hotmail & Outlook, Orange, SFR, Free, AOL, La Poste, Noos, Numericable, GMX, BBOX,  Bouygtel, Apple & iCloud. It’s user interface is available in both English & French.

To get started with Cleanfox, you need to input your email address & grant permission for limited access to your account(s), Cleanfox will scan your Inbox & other folders, compiling a list of subscriptions. It then gives you a list of subscriptions which you can unsubscribe to &/or delete old emails.

The folks behind this service claim that they will never disclose personal data to 3rd parties & will only exploit your personal data to produce statistics “on the basis of fully anonymized order confirmation emails”.

Foxintelligence is the Paris, France-based startup behind Cleanfox with a decidedly ecological mindset. It was recently founded by Parisian entrepreneur Edouard Nattée, who is also known for his work protecting consumers’ rights by having launched Misterfox, an app that helps travelers get economic compensation in case of train delays.
