‘Chill Code’ lets you make recipes for deploying Cloud infrastructure – #Startup

With the Chill Code service, developers can look for infrastructure software that’s popular in their tech community. It’s a public recipe library that you & others contribute to so that you can easily & automatically deploy Websites with full infrastructure software support.

This is the kind of service that begs to be explained via examples, but once you see what can be done with it you’ll wonder why no one thought of it before. It’s extremely useful & can really be a great time saver for developers.

Here are some of the sample “chills” or recipes mentioned in the Chill Code Site:

  • A WordPress chill would contain definitions for software (Apache HTTPD, PHP), config & demo Content from GitHub, a slot for a AWS database & startup commands & configuration options (e.g. that port 80 is public). Typically you’d have this running in 3 minutes.
  • A Drupal chill: the demo on the Site uses a popular Drupal pattern. You’d just replace the source code on the demo with your own on GitHub to get a website that would be up & running on AWS in 4 minutes
  • The cryptocurrency chill that includes layers for miners
  • A Tomcat chill that deploys Tomcat & a custom servlet onto the Cloud resulting in a ‘live’ Website

To get started with Chill Code you just choose software from their library, add a repo & recommended dependencies & deploy to your favorite cloud provider (for example AWS) or run locally. If you design your own chill or teak an existing one, you can find people find it by embedding a link in GitHub or a readme file, or post it on social media.

Chill Code aims to help build communities in a similar way as Stack Overflow or GitHub. It promotes ease of learning, adoption & participation. As they state in their Website, it’s pretty clear that “Communities make better software & with Chill Code communities can build better software infrastructure too. Developers make, share & fork infrastructure recipes that launch in the cloud with one click.”

Chill Code was founded in 2016 by UK based developer & entrepreneur Jasper Westaway & US based Kevin O’Donnell. It’s undergoing a private beta phase, so if you want to participate you’ll have to register here.
