Certain phone apps compromising users’ social network accounts

Using social network accounts to register/log on to other Sites helps save time & effort, right? Well, unfortunately, there are some smartphone apps where doing so could prove dangerous if this report by AppBugs is to be believed.

A couple of days ago, this apps security testing agency wrote on its official blog:

Many users  use their Facebook, Google, Twitter or Microsoft account to log in to many Online websites, services or mobile apps. Using the same account for many Online places is a convenience. At the same time, if any of those services don’t protect your log-in information properly it can get into the hands of malicious people or entities.

AppBugs found that there are mobile apps with over 80 million downloads that don’t handle properly the user information and as a result it can be easily stollen.

Here is a list of the apps that can leak your account information, if you use Facebook, Google, Twitter or Microsoft account to log in to their services.

  • MeituPic
  • Astro File Manager with Cloud
  • gReader
  • Windows Live Hotmail Push Mail
  • JustUnFollow
  • Brother iPrint & Scan
  • Software Data Cable
  • FriendCaster Chat
  • PrintHand Mobile Print
  • Phone for Google Voice & GTalk
  • Instachat
  • InstaMessage
  • InstaG
  • FoxIt MobilePDF

AppBugs has issued an advisory that users of the above apps create accounts directly & have and get unique user name & password for those services.

According to AppBugs’ estimate. there were other apps, too, with similar issues that were leaking users’ Facebook, Google, Twitter or Microsoft account details, promising to update the list in the coming days.
