‘Cardigan’ lets you find & delete old tweets

delete tweetsWhen you use Twitter to express your opinions on controversial subjects you may later regret tweets that you wrote in the heat of the moment. ‘Cardigan’ can be used to bulk delete tweets, saving you unwanted attention from friends or potential employers that may find your old tweets.

What you speak to others is usually quickly forgotten, but what you post on Twitter can easily resurface years later. As Cardigan’s FAQ page points out, there are many reasons why you’d want to audit your old tweets:

  • If you’ve changed your mind on an issue, old tweets may no longer reflect your views

  • It’s hard to convey context & nuance in 140 characters. Old tweets, outside the context of time, place & conversation thread, may thus give the wrong impression

  • We all sometimes say things we don’t mean, or that have impact we don’t intend, and don’t realize it until much later

  • Some of your old tweets may contain links to Content that no longer exists

  • You may simply want to clear out the clutter from your timeline & keep only the most interesting tweets

To use Cardigan’s service, you just connect to their Webpage, & then you authorize it to access & delete tweets on your behalf. The service then lets you scroll through your tweets & you point out the ones you want deleted by clicking on each. The tweets can be sorted by date & by number of retweets (you can filter by whether they’re retweets or replies), & you can also look for tweets that contain specific words, usernames or hashtags.

Once you’ve identified the batch of tweets that you want deleted, just click on the “Delete Tweets” button, & the list gets uploaded to Cardigan’s server Cloud for slow submission to Twitter for deletion. The deletion process can take hours or days if you’re trying to delete 1000s of tweets because of limitations Twitter places on deleting tweets.

Cardigan was developed by US-based company Materiality Labs LLC, & is free for personal use.
