Camera maker RED to build ‘Hydrogen One’ phone complete with holographic screen

This article was 1st published on our sister Site, Digital World Native.

It’s not easy for a business to make a living selling cameras these days, & RED, the high end camera maker, has decided to take the bull by the horns by making its own smartphone. The decision has come like a bolt out of the blue for the industry, though.

The phone in question is disruptive, it will use the Android OS & will not have a screen. Yup, you read right. Called the Hydrogen One it’s available for preorder from the company’s Site, where it’s touted as, “the world’s 1st holographic media machine. In your pocket. No glasses needed.” It’s available in 2 finishes: the titanium 1 is for US $1,595, while the aluminum 1 is for US $1,195. Estimated availability is for Q1 2018.

As per the details on the Site, the Hydrogen One will use a standard Android OS & will be a “standalone, full-featured, unlocked multiband smartphone.” It doesn’t make use of a wearable display, so you won’t need to wear glasses or headsets & you’ll be able to experience “look around depth” in the palm of your hand.
