A new report has said Google Play Services was integrated by nearly 100% of all Android apps, thus making it the numero uno of all Android Software Development Kits (SDK).

The report by SafeDK Mobile Ltd said Google Play was 1 of the most fundamental packages, offering Android developers a variety of important capabilities. As the Google Play Services SDK included 20 different packages, developers should use only those which they truly need. It noted that almost 50% of apps integrated Google Play Services as a whole.

The report said it had grouped all packages together in order to illustrate how widely this SDK
was used. 96.8% of all Android apps used at least one of the Play Services packages (nearly 6 packages on average).

Facebook won the 2nd place, said the report. Facebook was “extremely popular,” residing in millions of Android devices, offering important services such as login, sharing, analytics & more. Interestingly enough, the relatively new Facebook Analytics feature, which was part of the Facebook SDK, was already embraced by 15.6% of all apps.

The report said it was “interesting to see that Flurry (acquired by Yahoo) managed to stay at the top, even with the increasing competition from other free Analytics SDKs and the new generation of app Analytics & Retention SDKs.” Flurry played in 2 arenas: Analytics and Advertising. Chartboost, a popular Ad-network SDK for games, also made it to the top 5 because the research included many game apps.

Spelling out its aim, the latest study said 3rd party SDKs played a key part in the mobile app industry. Hundreds of thousands of app publishers were building millions of apps, with the crucial support of 3rd party mobile SDKs that provide their apps with advanced analytics, engagement, monetization, social & many other capabilities.

Though SDKs emerged only a few years ago, already see hundreds, if not thousands, of SDK companies were out there. This sector had also started witnessing consolidations & acquisitions as the digital / mobile world’s titans started to take notice & to claim their share. “But, as key as SDKs are, related stats & trends seem to be an industry secret”, said the report.

The 1st  edition of this report looks at April 2016 SDKs data, coming from 35,000 popular free Android apps, taken from all the top charts worldwide (including all categories, as well as Games and Family subcategories), & 100s of SDKs that were active internationally (both by large and small players).

The report looks at the following key trends:

  • How many SDKs, on average, are integrated into a mobile app, and how this number changes, based on the app category, number of users, & more.
  • SDKs global market penetration (popularity) by SDK category.
  • Specific SDKs’ market share in different countries, different SDK categories, & more.
  • These statistics, said the report, were “particularly valuable for app publishers in their quest to find the right SDKs to work with, as well as for SDK players who try to gauge the state of the competition.”
