Use Apps to block Ads

By: Ask Bob, Jan 24, 2012

This Startup could lead Startups like ours screaming blue murder. Called OverApps, it allows Website visitors to replace Online ads with Apps. This software blocks all the advertisements if a user so chooses, & replaces them with Apps of the visitor's choice. So poof, out go those "annoying" ads at the click of a button.

OverApps works on any Website & blocks virtually all sizes of ads. You need to install the software before you can start doing that. The software is Free.

Once you have installed this Add-on (it works on any Browser) you will see a button on the right hand corner of your Browser. Click on it & you will be taken to a list of Apps from the bank of Apps with OverApps.

The Browsers it works on are: On Windows PC: Firefox (3.6 or higher), Internet Explorer (8.0 or higher) & Google Chrome.   On Apple Mac: Mac OS 10.4 or higher, Firefox (3.6 or higher). The bank of Apps with OverApps is quite large. You have YouTube, Facebook Photos, Twitter, then Bikini Babes, Yelp, Digital Clock 2..... The list keeps growing every day.

OverApps is a product  of Web Widget Works LLC, & is based in California, USA.

Share your email knowledge with others

By: Ask Bob, Jan 13, 2012

So, what's new on the Internet guys? These days we are seeing more & more services & Applications revolving around the humble email coming up. GrexIt calls itself "your shared email memory", or simply put it's a tool that allows knowledge trapped in your email to be made available to others, a wider audience.

The guys at GrexIt are of the view that there is always useful knowledge hidden in your email's Inbox, which can be useful to others. This will probably die in your Inbox. GrexIt claims to solve this problem by letting you add Content from your Inbox to an Online shared repository, which anyone from your workplace in need of information can then access.

GrexIt is actually an Internet Browser plugin. As of now, though, GrexIt works only for Google Apps users. Google Apps is a service from Google providing independently customizable versions of several Google products, including Gmail, under a custom domain name. This also means you can not sign up to GrexIt with email ids like your-name@gmail.com or your-name@yahoo.com etc. It features several Web applications with similar functionality to traditional office suites, including Gmail, Google Calendar, Talk, Docs & Sites.

Coming back to GrexIt..... You and your colleagues can add email discussions from your Google Apps email Inboxes into a shared area, & all of you can then find "useful stuff" from this shared area. Once you have added a discussion to GrexIt, it automatically adds any follow up emails you receive on that discussion in your Inbox to GrexIt.

GrexIt, based in San Francisco, USA, has several uses: You can use it to create a central archive of all job applications your company receive, & what you discuss with the applicants; you can use this product to store all support requests & questions your team receives from your clients & you can manage your business leads better.

Test your App before launching

By: Ask Bob, Jan 12, 2012

Many Startups & new Apps face this problem. Before launching, they need to get their product tested. Obviously, individual Net surfers cannot be approached because of privacy issues, spam & also because it is time consuming. There's a Startup called BetaBait which gets App makers together with early App adapters or testers. So, if you have an untested App, you may well approach this Startup, which in turn, will put you in touch with consumers who are eager to try out new Apps, something like tea or wine testing. Alternatively, if you are an adventurous individual, you can register to try out new Apps.

Launched in 2011, BetaBait provides a "connect" for Startups to test & try their Web & mobile Applications. It is pretty obvious that all Startups need a test bed to find out whether what they had thought of on the design board is actually what the final product is, & whether people will like it or not. Are there any glitches that need to be ironed out while the Startup is in Beta.

So, BetaBait aims to provide a platform connecting these 2 communities - Startups & end-users. Early adopters & enthusiasts thus play an important role in helping the Startup work out bugs, create new features.

The service is Free & takes a few minutes to register. Once a Tester registers, he/she starts getting an email daily with the newest Apps listed. Startups, too, can submit their Apps in a matter of minutes for testing. BetaBait has a section called Apps where all such Apps that have been submitted are also listed under various categories along with brief descriptions. These include Real & Web World products.

Based in Connecticut, USA, BetaBait is a product of co-founders Rory Thompson & Cody Barbierri.

Add a watermark to your photographs

By: Ask Bob, Jan 9, 2012

All of us like to embelish our Blogs or any other type of Online Content with photographs. Many of us have randomly used photographs downloaded from the Web without giving a thought to copyright issues. On the other side of the fence, if you are a photographer, you would like to protect your work, Online. Now, to prevent such copyright violations & to ensure the photographer in you gets his due, there is a Startup called Water Marquee. This allows you to impose a watermark on your photograph or graphic art work to ensure nobody else steals it.

Copyright issues surrounding photographs or other types of images on the Net are a dime a dozen. Every day, we find some one or the other filing a case or complaining about such violations. Photographs are either not attributed or wrongly attributed.

Most photographers or image agencies have started adding watermarks to the images to protect them from theft Online. Startup Water Marquee provides such a watermarking service. For those of you who do not know what a watermark means, it is either a smaller image (almost always a logo or trademark) or text that is underlayed on an image so that anybody who uses that photo has no option but to use it with this secondary image, clearly showing where the photograph/image has been taken from.

There are 2 types of accounts you can open with Water Marquee - Free & Pro. Obviously, you need to pay for the Pro account, it's about US $10 a year. Water Marquee works in your Internet Browser itself so you do not need to download any software. The other benefits it promises is positioning the watermark wherever you want on the image & using either an image or text as a watermark. users also have control over the color & size of the watermark.

We could not find an About Us tab on this Startup so are unable to tell our readers where this Startup is located or about the people who run it.
