Nextdoor launches in 32nd city
New post on Official Blog |
 |
Our
mission at Nextdoor is to help neighbors build stronger and safer
places to call home. This is something we have in common with city
governments nationwide. This common goal has lead Nextdoor to work with
with dozens of cities throughout the state of California, and more
recently with cities across the country from Minnesota, Georgia, Florida
and Ohio.
Nextdoor
and local governments understand that when residents connect with each
other they look out for one another, can collectively solve problems
faster, and build a stronger sense of community.
Cities
that rollout Nextdoor provide residents with an easy way to stay
informed about what is happening in their city as well as their
neighborhood. City, police and fire officials can use Nextdoor to
broadcast important updates about everything from a gas leak to a crime
update to a new emergency preparedness plan.
This
week Nextdoor celebrated the launch of its 32nd city. As we continue to
grow we look forward to bringing Nextdoor to more cities - including
yours!
If you are interested in having your city rollout Nextdoor feel free to let us know at: city@nextdoor.com. If you want to tell your city to adopt Nextdoor - well that would be just fine by us.

a completely revamped version of the app for Windows Phone. GroupMe is a
group messaging service that can be used on any phone allowing users to
stay in touch with the important people in their lives.
Now GroupMe offers Windows Phone users additional features with the

We’re only a few weeks into 2012 and already have more great news. Klout has acquired Blockboard! This is Klout’s first acquisition, and it’s a very important one for us.

To keep driving toward our mission of unlocking every user’s
influence, we need to make Klout useful and accessible wherever they are

local-mobile app that connects neighbors to build stronger communities
through technology. You may have seen it featured in Techcrunch or AllThingsD.
This simple, well-designed tool gives people a way to communicate with
their neighbors about everything from local news and tips to lost pets
and broken streetlights.
With their experience, Blockboard brings an awareness of how social
media can be meaningfully woven into the fabric of a local community, as
well as a killer mobile app development team. Integrating the
Blockboard team, technology and expertise is a significant investment
into enriching the local and mobile experience for our passionate users,
and will be an incredible boost for all of us.

Coming soon: TinyLetter 2
Feb 16, 2012:
Hi there,
I'm so excited to be announcing that on February 22nd, TinyLetter 2 will finally be launching, and–oh, wait–I'm getting ahead of myself. Let me start over.
I'm Ben. From MailChimp. A few months ago, MailChimp acquired TinyLetter. What this means for you is that instead of being managed by one (incredibly awesome) guy, TinyLetter will soon be handed over and run by an incredibly awesome (imho) team. A team of geeks who love email. Meh, we'll get to know each other later. For now...
OMG what's changing?
Don't worry, we're not going to be making you learn new stuff, we're not
moving any cheese, and we're not bloating anything up. It was
TinyLetter's utter simplicity that we fell in love with, so we aim to
keep it that way. In fact, we might've made it even simpler. Here's a
sneak peek video you should watch (I'll wait):
As you can see, it's pretty simple. You should be able to log in and just–write.
If you're interested, below are more details about what's changing. We'll send additional updates when it's time to go live.
Changes to the interface
Our goal was to make TinyLetter's interface not just simple, but elegantly simple. So we made tiny (see what I did there?) improvements to the UI.
We added autosave to the composer screen, so you don't have to keep sending yourselves drafts:
TinyLetter had a limit on the number of contacts you could import (it
was 20, then later reduced to 10). Very understandable when you're one
guy running this as a labor of love, and you don't have a full-time
anti-abuse team to keep out the bad guys. Since we'll be transitioning
everything over to our infrastructure, we'll be removing that import
limit and adding new abuse prevention controls behind the scenes. We're
also adding the ability to import your gmail contacts:
We believe that email is a great opportunity to bond with your readers,
so for each contact, there's a new field to jot down some personal
notes:
Over at MailChimp, we've tried hard to make writing businessy email
newsletters fun. We kinda have a reputation for being cheeky monkeys. We
wanted to add some personality to TinyLetter too, but in a different
way. You'll find little details here and there that make the act of
writing more pleasant. For example, many screens have quotes from famous
writers:
and we have a fun little word counter that tracks your all time record:
and when you switch to full screen mode, it becomes a beautiful, distraction-free writing environment:
Aaaah. Breath of fresh air.
Other big changes
So the interface is changing, but it's nothing radically different. Behind the scenes though, there's a lot more going on.
New Delivery Engine
TinyLetter was an app that Philip built on a very, um, "special" back end.
He then wired it up to an outsourced email delivery service. That
worked fine, until TinyLetter hit some recent growing pains (punishment
for being so awesome), and it was time to take email delivery and IP
reputation management a lot more seriously. So when we launch TinyLetter
2 on 2/22, we'll also be switching email traffic over to the MailChimp
infrastructure. Switching delivery engines almost always results in a
bumpy ride as far as email deliverability goes, but I guarantee the
MailChimp delivery team will make things smooth really quick.
Paid Subscriptions
Another big change we're making is to paid subscriptions. There are over
48,000 users of TinyLetter, but only 144 of them actually run paid
newsletters. That tells you how little this feature is used. Even Kevin Rose, a pretty famous TinyLetter user imho,
eventually switched his paid newsletter to free. On top of that, this
little feature creates 99% of the problems reported to TinyLetter. The
support inbox is flooded by emails from people who don't remember
subscribing to publications, people who want their $2 back because a
writer forgot to publish his newsletter (or the writer did
publish, but some spam filter intercepted it), writers who get angry
when Paypal doesn't transfer funds fast enough, Paypal threatening to
shut down the entire account if they don't make the complaining stop,
etc. We love email, but even we know that it's very rare for people to
actually pay for them. This is a feature that generates a lot of
overhead, for not a lot of profit (hmm, since we don't even charge for
this service, it technically generates negative profit). So we're not
going to be supporting this feature moving forward. Don't worry, though:
if you're currently running a paid newsletter, and you have more than 1
subscriber, we're leaving your account alone until July 1st 2012.
Everyone else's TinyLetter account will be upgraded to V2. Paid
subscriber publishers will be left as-is (old interface and all), and
moved to a new subdomain: http://p.tinyletter.com
(I know this is a lot to absorb right now, so we'll send a reminder to
paid newsletter publishers as we get closer to launch).
That'll give those users several months to find a new provider. We hear good things about letter.ly.
MailChimp even has a paid subscription feature, but since we make so
little money from it, and since I'll probably be accused of trying to
force people to switch to MailChimp, I'm kinda hesitant to point you that way.
We know that for some of you, this is your business and it makes you
real money. We're very sorry for the stress and inconvenience, and we're
doing our best to give you plenty of time to find a new service. Even
though it's a great feature, it's a feature that makes no business sense
for us to provide in TinyLetter.
Our vision for TinyLetter
At MailChimp, we think a lot about how people communicate. Not just via email, but on social networks too. We've added tons of social features to MailChimp to help businesses attract more readers. We also tell our customers to try to be more human.
That's the greatest differentiator a business can have these days: a
personality. And with Twitter and Facebook, it's easier than ever to
show customers and fans your personal side. Thing is, after you've grown
a huge fan base or a bunch of followers, it's hard to send them a
simple, personal note via email. Gmail isn't built for that. MailChimp
is overkill for that. TinyLetter? Just right for that. Tinyletter's like twitter, but for newsletters. Or like MailChimp, but
for people. Or like Gmail, but for groups. Above all else, TinyLetter is
for people with something to say.

Comment To tweaks its Subscribers' section
Jan 18, 2012:
Hi,
commentto has just updated the "Subscribers" part of the website to make
things easy for you.
It is now much easier than before to know who you have made subscribers,
and who has made you a subscriber.
Now when you go to the "subscribers" page, there are defined sections for:
"Mutual subscribers": You both have allowed each other to look at each
others' updates.
"Subscribers only": Only you have made them your subscribers, and allowed
them to look at your updates.
"Subscriptions only": Only they have made you a subscriber, and allowed
you to look at his/her updates.
You might ask, "Why not just have add as friends or let me directly
subscribe to someone?"
- Well, "friends" model is very overused, and commentto is a content
sharing network where "subscribers" and "subscriptions" models make more
sense.
- Also, by having you, the user, make someone a subscriber, commentto
gives you control over who can see your data. So, for example, if I don't
want a stranger to look at my excerpts, then I don't make him/her my
subscriber.
- Another important reason is because the features that are coming to
commentto will be related to the "subscribers" model in a robust way, so
that it is even easier for you to share excerpts.
Again, all of your relations on commentto are kept as they are. Only how
your relations are presented has been made easier.

Nextdoor launches new feature
Jan 10, 2012:
Today we are pleased to announce a new way to exchange time sensitive information with your neighbors.
Normally, when a member posts a message on their Nextdoor website, their neighbors are notified by email. For especially time-sensitive information, this may not be fast enough.
To help in these cases, we have added a new “urgent alerts” capability. An urgent alert is a special type of post that reaches members immediately via mobile phone text message and email. It’s intended for the rare cases where information is very important and time-sensitive, such as:
Suspicious activity
Missing children
Fires, floods or other disasters
Local evacuations
We hope your neighborhood never needs to use this capability, but we’ve added it to Nextdoor just in case. When things like this do happen, it helps to get the word out to the neighborhood so that everyone has accurate and timely information.
To receive urgent alerts from your neighbors via text message, you’ll need to add your mobile phone number to your account (your phone number is kept private and only used for urgent alerts). By default, you’ll also receive urgent alerts by email.
To send an alert, visit your Nextdoor website and click the “Send alert” link on the top right of the homepage, near where you’d normally add a post.
Add an urgent alert
Since urgent alerts must fit within a mobile phone text message, they should be short updates (at most 110 characters).
Sending an urgent alert
Sending your alert will notify your neighbors via email and text message.
Have questions? Check out the alerts FAQ, or email us at [email protected] Also, we appreciate hearing any comments you have on urgent alerts--please send them to us at [email protected]

Click.to adds Skype as partner
Jan 3, 2012:
Axonic Informationssysteme GmbH from Karlsruhe, Germany is pleased to announce its successful partnership with Skype. As part of the Skype developer program click.to is now plugged into Skype. It’s now possible for users of click.to to call any phone number, from anywhere on the desktop, with one click through Skype.
Initiating Phone calls through Skype with one click
Skype is removing communication barriers to create more meaningful connections among friends, families, and business colleagues. Skype’s text, voice and video make it simple to share experiences with the people that matter to you, wherever they are. With Skype people also can call mobiles or landlines, anywhere in the world at Skype’s low call rates. Those wanting to avoid the bother of entering calling numbers manually into Skype, or copying and pasting, can now rely on click.to. The application seamlessly plugs into Skype and simply skips the actions between the copy and paste commands. With the new "click.to" function, the Skype icon appears above the cursor after you copy a phone number, and clicking the icon initiates a Skype call.
Martin Welker, CEO and founder of Axonic, said: “Skype is a game changer when it comes to communication. click.to now being plugged into Skype makes it easier for consumers to make calls with Skype. Moving numbers on a screen to a phone call with one click! It’s pretty amazing!"
Chris Andrews, Group Program Manager for the Skype Developer Program: "We are on a mission to connect over 1 billion people. Our developer program is a key step to achieve this goal. It’s always great to see on how small innovations make it easier for people to connect with their friends and families on Skype."
The click.to Revolution
The initiation and conclusion of an action are often a world of clicks apart: click.to addresses this issue by completing the search of technical articles on Wikipedia or the looking up of addresses on Google Maps with just one click. After initiating the copy command (Ctrl + C or Ctrl + X), a small menu of icons appears above the mouse cursor, which can be used to direct the selected content to the desired target application; click.to automatically takes care of opening the browser and typing in the website address. And not only that: with click.to, pictures, documents, and PDFs can be sent to an e-mail address, or uploaded to a web service like Evernote or Facebook, all with a single click. In short, click.to advances the “Copy and Paste” principle and uses intuitive programming to link the desktop and the web with the optimum number of clicks: just one.
click.to is available for Mac and Windows. The free program can be downloaded at www.clicktoapp.com.
