The world’s five oldest domains/websites ….& most are still functional
Age and Time have always fascinated Man. We are no different. Recently, we sent a few of our webspiders back in time with one task – find out the world’s 5 oldest domains and their status. They came back with a list, and the amazing fact that contrary to popular perception, the first domain was registered as way back as March 15, 1985. Gosh, that's been a while. So this year, the webworld is actually celebrating the 25th anniversary of the first domain (s) ever registered.
Before we get into the thick of things, let us first give you the names of the world’s First Five domains:
March 15, 1985 symbolics.com ( http://www.symbolics.com/index.php ) Bought over but Functional
April 24, 1985 www.bbn.com Part of new business group but Functional
May 24, 1985 www.think.com ( http://www.thinkquest.org/en/ ) Part of new group with new URL - Functional
July 11, 1985 http://www.mcc.com/ Not clear
Sept. 30, 1985 www.dec.com ( http://www.hp.com/#Product ) Page re-directed to new URL
So, there you are. Feeling nostalgic? The 80s were a time of Pop music and Michael Jackson and Bruce Springsteen, and of course, Madonna. It was the intervening period between the hi-tech ‘90s and the revolutionary ‘70s. Who would have thought that even then, there were a few who had quietly charted out a new course for themselves….
Coming back to the present - Symbolics.com has a proud banner across the site today, marking its 25 years of existence and proclaiming the fact that it is the world’s first domain registered ever. This was by the Symbolics Computer Corp. in Massachusetts but in 2009, the domain was sold to XF.com Investments for a fabulous yet undisclosed sum. A visit to the site today throws up some highly interesting nuggets about the Internet. All you websurfers MUST read it.
BBN Technologies is today a part of the Raytheon Group and continues to be a technology services company.
When one keys in www.think.com it opens up into http://www.thinkquest.org/en/ which mentions that it is part of Oracle ThinkQuest, a learning platform where students and teachers develop learning programmes.
The URL MCC.com exists but throws up listings, confounding our webspiders.
Now that we have recorded the world's first 5 domains, we must say this -the first 5 or even 10 or even 100 domains ever registered were obviously mere online versions of their brick-n-mortar avataars. These were really not websites or portals/vortals in the strictest sense of the word, or as we know them today.
So we have given our webspiders a new assignment - find out the first 5 actual websites or to be more specific, first 5 'real' portals that were hosted and their status. By this we mean - those that were pure online instruments, not having any 'Real World' versions. After all, do not forget - this website is only about the Internet and for the Internet, and not about the 'Real World'. Adios till then.
