For those
of you who are not too familiar with the Web World and some of its terminology,
this Tutorial should be of help. Here, we have put together some oft-used words
on the Internet, and given you their basic meaning/explanation.
Browser:
Software that allows you to view web pages on the Internet. Eg: Internet
Explorer, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox.
Browse:
Like when you read a book or a newspaper, you flip the pages to Read; when you
go on the Internet and log into any website, and you go through its various
sections and online pages, you are then Browsing the Net.
Surfing:
Unlike Browsing, here, you go from website to website, much like an actual
surfer does, when he moves on from one wave to another wave on the ocean on his surfboard. This
is called Internet surfing.
Bookmark:
All browsers have a method by which you can "save" the link to a
website or blog or any other URL you have liked. By doing this, you do not need
to remember and type out the entire URL or webaddress of that site everytime
you want to log in. To create a 'Bookmark' or a 'Favourite' just go to the
section on your browser marked 'Bookmarks' or 'Favourites' and click on the
button that says, 'Add'. Your website will then be saved. Whenever you want to go to that
particular website, then, you can go back to the 'Bookmarks' or 'Favourites' section. A list
of all the websites you have saved as your favourites shall appear. Click on
the one you want and start surfing.
Domain
& Domain name: Domain is sometimes used to identify the geographical
location of a site. Eg: ca means
Canada, and so on. Domain is akin
to cluster, i.e. all education sites are under the .eu domain, all government
sites are under .guv, and so on. A domain name is like the name of each
individual in the 'Real World' such as Harry or Sam, only it is much more than
just a name. When you call out Harry, you cannot know whether Harry is tall, dark or handsome, except the fact that perhaps Harry is a male. A domain name has much more information in it. It is also sometimes mistakenly called a URL (Uniform
Resource Locator). A domain name is part of the entire URL and NOT another name
for URL.
Eg: http://www.whatsnewonthenet.com/index
Here: http:// refers to the Type of File
www.whatsnewonthenet.com is
the Domain Name, and
/Index is the path or directory where the file lies.
IP
Address: Short for Internet Protocol number or address. Eg: 163.21.23.2.Used to
identify every computer or computing device on the entire Internet.
Internet
Service Provider: Any agency or private company that provides your computer an
Internet link through a modem most-often for a fee is called as an ISP or
Internet Service Provider.
Download:
Basically means copying something from the Net onto another device - a hard
drive of your computer or pen drive or DVD.
Link: Generally marked in blue, a link is any word or part of a sentence or picture of video which connects you to another website. Clicking on a link with your mouse or keypad will take you to that website. Links are used to connect same-interest content or websites.
